Habitat Restoration

Since 2020, Georgia Seafoods has been proud to support the restoration of Middle Island alongside Falklands Conservation, helping to re-establish native tussac habitat across an island significantly affected by historic erosion.

Through the careful planting of locally sourced tussac grass, this long-term initiative is contributing to the recovery of an important coastal environment within one of the Falklands’ most significant rodent-free island groups.

As a company whose business is rooted in the South Atlantic, Georgia Seafoods sees environmental stewardship as a responsibility as well as an investment in place. Tussac plays a vital role in the Falklands’ coastal ecosystem, helping to bind soil, reduce further erosion and create habitat for native wildlife. With more than 13 hectares now planted on Middle Island and clear signs of ongoing recovery emerging on the ground, the initiative is already demonstrating meaningful ecological value.

The project was also initiated with the ambition of contributing, over time, to the offsetting of a portion of the company’s CO2 emissions, reflecting the peat-forming nature of tussac habitat and its potential role in carbon storage. While the scientific assessment of carbon capture is still developing and remains preliminary, the restoration of Middle Island stands as a tangible example of long-term environmental action in the Falklands.
