Ocean Fish Group — Excellence in Seafood & Responsible Sourcing
Ocean Fish Group is recognised as Cornwall’s oldest fishing and processing import/export business, combining generations of local fishing heritage with a modern, fully integrated supply chain. The company manages every stage of the journey from catch to customer, ensuring consistent quality, provenance, and responsible sourcing.
Heritage and Development
Ocean Fish was founded in 1989 by Andrew and Edward Lakeman, and by 1992 had firmly established itself as a leader in the UK seafood industry. Over the decades, the business continued to expand under the leadership of CEO Leigh Genge, strengthening its market position through the acquisition of W Stevenson & Sons in Newlyn and a majority joint venture with Chapman’s of Sevenoaks. These strategic expansions enabled the company to become a key supplier to wholesale, foodservice, and retail customers across the UK and Europe.
A New Era Under Fortuna
In November 2025, Ocean Fish became part of the Fortuna Group, the largest fishing and marine services company in the British Overseas Territories. This milestone strengthened the company’s operational capacity and expanded its access to global markets. Fortuna has expressed a clear commitment to supporting Ocean Fish’s future—recognising the cultural, social, and economic importance of the seafood industry to both Cornwall and the wider UK.
Fully Integrated Operations
Ocean Fish operates a vertically integrated supply chain, providing complete oversight from sea to shore:
- Fishing & Quota Management: The company owns and operates vessels and quota, maintaining strong links to the South West’s historic fishing communities.
- Market Leadership: It is one of the largest buyers across South West markets and plays a central role in managing Newlyn Fish Market, ensuring consistent access to premium Cornish seafood.
- Processing Excellence: Two stateoftheart processing facilities in St Austell handle a wide range of fresh and frozen products for both bulk distribution and retailready lines.
- Distribution & Export: With a robust logistics network, Ocean Fish supplies major UK retailers, continental European partners, and international markets.
Product Range and Capabilities
Ocean Fish handles over 30 species of wild and farmed fish and molluscs daily, sourced from its own fleet, South West markets, and global supply partners. Products are available in both fresh and frozen formats for wholesale, retail, and foodservice customers.
Commitment to Sustainability
The company places sustainability at the heart of its operations. As an MSC certified producer and member of the Sustainable Seafood Coalition, Ocean Fish is dedicated to responsible fishing, minimising environmental impact, and ensuring long-term marine stewardship. It also actively collaborates with local communities and environmental organisations to support the future of Cornwall’s fishing industry.
Future Outlook
With the support of the Fortuna Group, Ocean Fish is positioned for continued growth and innovation. The partnership enhances access to new species, markets, and operational synergies, supporting the company’s ambitions for significant expansion—including a target of reaching £100 million in turnover by 2030.
